Overcoming IoT curse for tangible subscriber growth with eSIM

According to a yet another report on IoT, this time by Ericsson, mobile IoT connections are projected to grow (you knew that part) to nearly 6 billion by 2026 from 1.7 billion in 2020. To secure their share of the market, mobile network operators need to enter the space swiftly and strategically, or they could find their projects being one of the eight in ten that fail.

Why? Because these startling statistics prove it’s simply not enough to do IoT for the sake of doing something IoT, there must be a clear business case and it must be able demonstrate a timely return on investment.

In case of eSIM, one of the challenges of implementation stems largely from the fact that the GSMA standards require operators to implement and manage eSIM devices using two specification, one for the consumer market and the other for the enterprise M2M/IoT segment.

Two eSIM management systems mean double the amount of work required for MNOs to connect consumer and enterprise devices, a two-fold increase in the implementation and maintenance costs, as well as twice the chance of unexpected issues occurring post-implementation.

Getting started in IoT can be complex – whether its an enterprise or consumer implementation – and securing funding for new projects is difficult at the best of times, least so in the midst of a pandemic. According to a recent survey conducted by Microsoft, 4 out of 5 respondents considered cost and scaling IoT projects to be the biggest challenges.

How did we get here?

MNOs can improve their project success chances by choosing a partner that have a proven track record of security, deployment and support as well as the relevant accreditations such as GSMA SAS. Another factor to take into consideration is the provider’s pricing model which should allow service providers to scale up without large set up costs that hamper the initial ROI.

Using industry reports as preliminary guidelines for choosing providers, MNO decision makers can identify more clearly suitable partners. This would help them determine whether the vendor is a verified provider who has the necessary the technical and commercial capabilities to support your business deliver a competitive IoT solution.

Recent reports by industry analysts have identified Workz as a world leader within the SIM and eSIM spaces, namely as a top five global eSIM manager, a top six producer of embedded SIM hardware and also as the world’s largest manufacturer of telecom cards.

The good news is that there’s a scalable solution that makes it possible to connect all consumer and M2M/IoT devices that enables remote SIM provisioning across both verticals: its called hybrid eSIM management. Unlike traditional eSIM management solutions which lead to unnecessary duplication of effort, hybrid eSIM management offers several important benefits stemming from the consolidation of the consumer and IoT vertical markets:

One implementation: Hybrid eSIM management makes it possible to quickly and easily to reach new subscribers and grow existing ones into high-ARPU users whilst at the same time, establish new revenues in the rapidly growing M2M market with just one project implementation with a single pricing model.

One solution to maintain: Instead of managing eSIM devices across two systems, operators that choose a hybrid eSIM solution get to enjoy a streamlined management process requiring minimal time and resources.

One provider to interact with: With hybrid eSIM management, operators have only to interact with a single point of contact and pay just one bill. This means greater agility, faster delivery, reduced time and cost.

Deployment time and process is crucial for success

As one of only seven complete eSIM providers in the world certified by the GSMA’s Security Accreditation Scheme (SAS), Workz can ensure complete security, interoperability, and scalability, helping operators capture today’s and tomorrow’s IoT opportunities in the most efficient way possible.

Mike Kornev, Managing Director at MTX Connect, vouches for ease of deployment with Workz:

As our remote SIM provisioning partner, Workz fully supported us throughout our transition to a digital provider. The project was delivered way ahead of schedule within just two weeks making us the first in the region to offer eSIM.

With hybrid eSIM management, MNOs can choose between cloud and on-site deployment options:

Cloud deployment: With its OPEX-friendly model, cloud deployment helps avoid large setup fees and maintenance costs, making it ideal for those who would like to see the growth of revenue from new markets, such as wearables, utilities, and automotive, without making a large up-front investment. There are also multiple locations to support geo-redundancy.

On-site deployment: While the on-site deployment model does require more costly implementation (hardware setup & testing) and maintenance, it enables MNOs to comply with data residency laws and is also suited to larger entities with operations in multiple countries that can host everything from one central location. As part of its on-site solution, Workz offers project setup consultancy to help MNOs fast-track GSMA SAS certification in less than six months

To help our customers achieve the best return on investment, we ensure the following:

With eSIM in over 110 devices worldwide, it’s important that operators get their foot in the door sooner rather than later and leverage the new mobile IoT opportunities decisively.

The hybrid eSIM management solution is the only offering that combines the management of consumer and M2M eSIM devices on a single platform with one pricing model, one implementation, and one solution to maintain. This makes it the right choice for all operators who would like to take advantage of the immense opportunity represented by the rapidly expanding IoT segment but who do not have the luxury of unlimited budgets or feel the pressures of instant returns.
