Workz M2M Remote SIM Provisioning Architecture
Here is a quick introduction to the M2M Remote SIM Provisioning Architecture and its key components:
eUICC. Starting with the eSIM or more specifically its software the eUICC - This is a secure element that contains one or more network profiles. Each profile enables the eUICC to function in the same way as a traditional removable SIM and connect to a mobile network.
Mobile Network. The eUICC contains profiles from Mobile Network Operators which allow the SIM to connect to their cellular networks.
EUM. The eUICC is produced by an eUICC manufacturer or EUM who is responsible for the secure upload of the eUICC’s data to the SIM.
SM-DP. Subscription Management – Data Preparation is the activity in which network profiles are prepared, packaged and stored
SM-SR. Subscription Management – Secure Routing is the activity in which profiles are remotely managed on a device. Meaning they are added, enabled, disabled or deleted.
All these components need to be considered to effectively and securely manage eSIM devices over-the-air.

So why eSIM?
The world is changing, and technology is changing with it. Mobile loT is growing at an exponential rate, with the global machine-to-machine sector alone expected to be worth 93 billion dollars by 2022.
This growth is being driven by new technologies such as 5G and eSIM. Together, these technologies will make devices smarter, more efficient, more effective and significantly more valuable than ever before.
Cutting edge technologies, such as 5G, will enable data to be transmitted at far higher speeds and at far greater volumes.
Another critical emerging technology is the embedded SIM or eSIM. The eSIM simplifies mobile connectivity and brings it to a far wider range of devices such as cars, smart energy, and health monitoring.
eSIM technology is revolutionary in that it is now embedded into next-generation devices. With no need to open up a device and swap out plastic SIM cards, it virtualises the physical SIM and makes switching mobile network operators a great deal easier.
So how does eSIM technology help device manufacturers and service providers?
eSIMs offer multiple speed, cost and flexibility benefits that traditional SIMs can’t match. They are also easier to produce, easier to manage and enhance device functionality and create the potential for a host of new value-added services.
Here’s the techy bit:
• It is up to 98% smaller - saving critical space within the device.
• It’s considerably lighter weighing nearly 20 times less
• It has a lifespan ten times greater allowing up to 1 million rewrites of its memory
• It’s far more durable, withstanding extreme temperatures from as low as minus 40 to over 100 Degrees Celsius
• It’s also a great deal stronger with high shock resistance allowing it to perform in the most demanding operational conditions.
• As it’s embedded within the device, it enables a fully waterproof product
• And offers greater tamper-resistance
Most impressively, the eSIM software is designed to simplify the connectivity process, giving OEMs and service providers maximum control, allowing devices to connect to any mobile network operator in the world. With universal out-of-the-box global connectivity, manufacturers and providers no longer need to organise specific network connectivity agreements prior to market launch. This can save a huge amount of time and cost in product distribution and stock management with a one-size-fits-all solution. This individual unit can be sold anywhere in the world.
Mobile IoT creates a huge opportunity …which is where we come in.

So why eSIM?
The eSIM is a global specification by the GSMA which enables remote SIM provisioning of any mobile device. Users no longer need to change the physical SIM to change network. The eUICC software allows the SIM to connect to any network with profile additions, updates and deletions all managed over the air.
Notably this means the user now has the chance to connect directly to a local operator network when travelling and device manufacturers no longer need to provision their devices for each specific country which offers multiple speed, cost and flexibility benefits.
The eSIM chip itself is also highly attractive to manufacturers as it is smaller, lighter, more durable and can be sealed directly into devices, allowing them to be fully waterproof. This means eSIM brings mobile connectivity to a wider range of devices such as smart watches, fitness bands, portable health systems, drones, smart glasses - you name it. As a result, SIM penetration is set to grow exponentially far beyond the single SIM most users have in their mobile phone today.
A market report by Counterpoint has estimated that the eSIM market will grow from 364 million devices shipped in 2018 to nearly 2 billion by 2025 with hyper-adoption now expected following the launch of several flagship consumer devices such as the latest smartphones and watches by the likes of Samsung and Apple. More and more eSIM devices are expected to follow soon.
So what are the benefits of the eSIM to the network operator?
According to the GSMA, this technology gives operators greater means to expand their businesses into emerging markets such as automotive, wearables and consumer electronics. SIM card distribution time and costs will be eliminated, and eSIMs will enable new distribution models for devices and for marketing of subscriptions. It’s probably also worth considering: New eSIM device owners are high ARPU subscribers, By offering this enhanced service you can reinforce your public perception as a market leader, And there is an opportunity to expand your in-country roaming revenues with a large proportion of travellers who were once silent roamers due to speed, connectivity, and cost now having these barriers removed with easy access to a local network. All of these factors create a huge opportunity for the operator …which is where we come in.

What’s more, our server components have also undergone comprehensive interoperability testing on all key market devices.
How long does it take to get up and running?
Going live using your existing subscriber registration process and systems with a QR-code-based activation mechanism can take literally only a couple of weeks.
This involves providing the subscriber with a QR code that directs them to a unique weblink to download their profile. The QR code is made up of a string of data, typically including a Matching ID. The SM DP+ Platform will generate these IDs either in real time via eSIM profile ordering or in batch for storage on an operator’s fulfilment backend. The subscriber registers at the point of sale where they obtain a printed QR code and ICCID barcode. The ICCID barcode is scanned by the retailer to record the subscription on the operators back-end systems. The QR-code can then be scanned by the subscriber to activate an online link to their profile. Once they download the profile from this link they are free to activate it.
This type of set up is a standard mechanism in the GSMA specification and is the fastest route to market for an operator as it uses existing systems and processes enabling you to quickly capture critical market share ahead of competitors. Once your eSIM offering is up and running, we can support full integration with the DP+, self-care portals and apps, Local Profile Assistant, Discovery Service and all your business support systems providing extensive APIs and testing. Again, we recommend advanced integration to be treated as a phase two implementation to ensure subscription sales and market share are maximised.
So how do you get started?
For the QR code-based provisioning approach we only require the following: the Input file, Network authentication keys and Electrical profile. From here going live is a short three-step process which means we can get you up and running within days.
One. Test profile generation: Once you have provided the input files, network authentication keys and electrical profile, you can expect us to start the profile development and testing phase. We will provide profile generation, output files for network provisioning and QR codes for testing.
Two. Testing and user acceptance: You will receive test profiles and QR codes to test on your network and devices.
Three. Go live: Following your acceptance of the test profile, we will then release live profiles and supporting activation codes so you can enable users to connect their eSIM devices to your network.
We offer an extremely efficient low-cost, pay-as-you-go model with no setup costs, equipment or other CAPEX expenses required. Billing is done quarterly and based only on the number of profiles downloaded so you pay only for what you use.
